Reports: Test scores, grades don’t jibe

WASHINGTON - Large percentages of high school seniors are posting weak scores on national math and reading tests even though more of them are taking challenging courses and getting higher grades in school, say two new government reports released Thursday.

“The reality is that the results don’t square,” said Darvin Winick, chair of the independent National Assessment Governing Board, which oversees the national tests.

Nearly 40 percent of high school seniors scored below the basic level on the math test. More than a quarter of seniors failed to reach the basic level on the reading test. Most educators think students ought to be able to work at the basic level.

    This is something I’ve known for 25 years. And they are just figuring this out NOW?

    I keep reading rumblings about the increasing (supposed) gap between the ultra-rich and the middle class, not to mention the working poor. What I’ve read so far has been full of abstractions, but I have to wonder if this is an example of how increasing gaps between the socioeconomic classes will play out.
    (Right about now is when my mother would call me a socialist, by the way. I’m not a socialist, Mom, I’m just talking here.)
    So, more and more kids are taking more and more college credit courses in high school. And more and more kids are failing in the basics. Is this the educational version of 10% of our population owning 90% of the stock on the NYSE & NASDAQ? I’m sure I have those figures wrong, but you know what I mean…
